He gently caressed the infant’s forehead and laid her on his chest. He began to hum, a low and solid rhythm emanating from his throat. The deep vibrations energized the air. Caelum’s wings stretched around him; the gold in his feathers twinkled with each sound. Mynlaq felt unexpected tears running down his cheeks as Caelum’s song filled the shrine with visible sound waves. He saw that Elder Ghada seemed to be in a euphoric trance. Time passed slowly before the infant’s face twisted, taking a sudden breath. She began to cry, and the humming ceased. Caelum soothed her until her breathing slowed, and she fell asleep. He handed the child to Mynlaq.
