“Two burly men dressed in red robes followed the guards, leading a line of filthy, haggard young women covered with rags held together by chains. Many sobbed quietly, and others held their heads down as they walked. One of the women gazed defiantly into the distance, her arms covered in tiny marks that glinted like bright stars on her jet-black skin. She was taller than the others, and her thick hair did little to hide the deep scars that covered her face. She ignored the jeers of the citizens as they passed until a small stone struck her face. She winced at the impact and stopped, scanning the crowded market until she saw the man and the young girl in the alley. She searched the girl’s face and gave her a sad, mischievous smile. The girl wriggled out of the man’s hold, pulled up her hood, and disappeared into the crowd. One of the men in red robes came beside the woman and jerked the chain, forcing her to trip. She gripped the chain around her wrists and caught herself before she fell. ”
